Hands on with Clipp: the bar tab phone app

Clipp IMG_0128 Clipp (iPhone/Android) is one of my favourite apps that I love to show off whenever someone asks me what they should try next.

Ever started a tab at a bar, and then left without your credit card? Did a bit of a beer tasting, and forgot the name of the one you really liked? Or just simply want to keep track of your spending on a night out?

Clipp is yet another one of those mobile payment apps, but tailored just for your local pub or hotel. Download the app, create an account, and add your credit card or PayPal account to get started. You’ll see a list of nearby venues, including those who have ‘hot offers’ if you’re in quick enough. [Read more…]

Review: Telstra TV

telstra-tv-461x259

The Telstra TV is Telstra’s attempt at taking up one of those precious HDMI ports at the back of your TV. While Telstra had previously offered the T-Box, the Telstra TV is simpler, and hence cheaper. Gone is the free-to-air tuner, the DVR functionality, and all the parts of Foxtel I loved – (cheap) access to live channels and some on demand/catchup options.

In return, you get a sleek little box that offers access to all the major streaming platforms in Australia, in a simple straightforward way.  [Read more…]

Review: Gramofon by Fon and Spotify Connect

FonGramofonOne of the cooler projects I backed on Kickstarter last year (which actually shipped!), was the Gramofon, from Fon.

Touted as the ‘Modern Cloud Jukebox’, Gramofon is first and foremost a super easy way to stream your Spotify tunes to your existing sound system without breaking the bank by investing in brand new speakers – and not having any more cables and cords to worry about!

A small little black box (measuring 80 x 80 x 42 mm), the Gramofon has just a small array of ports – on the back you’ve got a ‘power’ jack (as expected), an ‘internet’ and a ‘router’ ethernet jacks, and a 3.5mm audio jack for your speakers. But then, you’re not getting this for a router or a hub! [Read more…]

Review: Mobile Foxtel

IMG_8780One of the more unique services that Telstra Mobile customers have access to, is ‘Mobile Foxtel’. For a monthly subscription fee you get access to a selection of channels to stream on your iPhone or Android device.

Available in three different ‘packages’, starting at $8/month for the ‘Value’ pack – including National Geographic, MTV, Sky News and CNN, to $15/month for the ‘Ultimate’ Pack, which adds channels like Lifestyle, FOX8 and Comedy, up through to the ‘Sport’ pack for $20/month which adds another four sport channels. In addition, ABC1 and SBS One are ‘included’ with all of the packs.

Mobile Foxtel is unmetered for Telstra customers, meaning you can stream as often, for as long as you like without having to worry about chewing through the data limit on your phone.

Review: Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 Pro (13″)

lenovo-yoga-tablet-2-pro-1380-main

There’s no shortage of tablets available on the market, but Lenovo’s trying to do something different with the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 Pro. It’s an Android tablet that has a massive 13” screen, and also packs an inbuilt projector.

If you’re used to other tablets, chances are they would have been smaller than the Tablet 2 Pro – this thing is massive. The screen comes in at 13.3”, and packs a 2560 x 1440 resolution, giving you a pixel density of 221 ppi. It’s great for reading text and browsing the web on while the bright and vivid colors help make your photos look fantastic. The viewing angles aren’t too bad, so there’s not much to worry about what angle you’re looking the Tablet 2 Pro from. [Read more…]
